Chinese Pear, also known as Ussurian Pear (Pyrus ussuriensis), is one of the hardiest pear species available, valued for its exceptional cold tolerance, fast growth, and beautiful ornamental display. Native to Northern China and Korea, this deciduous fruit tree produces abundant white blossoms in early spring before the leaves emerge, creating a dramatic “cloud of snow” effect in the landscape.
This dense, rounded tree matures at 40–50 feet tall and provides year-round interest. Glossy oval deep green leaves fill out through summer, followed by vibrant fall colors in shades of red, burgundy, purple, and yellow—often appearing together on the same tree.
The round greenish-yellow fruit has a somewhat dry but pleasant flavor and is especially suited for canning and preserves. Extremely frost hardy and highly resistant to fireblight, Ussurian Pear is ideal for colder climates, wildlife plantings, windbreaks, ornamental landscapes, espalier, or bonsai.
