Cultivated extensively and famously known as the IPB9 variety (and often referred to as the Indonesian "California" Papaya), the Calina is celebrated by agricultural experts and tropical growers worldwide for its exceptional production qualities. Beneath its thick, smooth, and beautifully deep green skin—which transitions to a vibrant golden-yellow when ripe—lies a remarkably firm, brilliant reddish-orange flesh. It delivers an outstanding, highly satisfying eating experience, completely free of any strong musky odor, featuring a clean, concentrated sweetness that clocks in at a high Brix rating of 10–14%.
Our select package contains 150++ high-viability, freshly harvested seeds chosen specifically for their superior genetic purity, excellent seedling vigor, and uniform growth potential. The Calina Papaya is a remarkably sturdy, dwarf-stature variety, meaning the tree stays relatively short, allowing you to harvest heavy clusters of large, oblong fruits easily right from the ground without a ladder. Highly adaptable, fast-maturing, and incredibly prolific, this exceptional variety is perfect for dense orchard farming, backyard food forests, or even large patio container systems in warm microclimates.

🌿 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Carica papaya L. (Var. Calina / IPB9)
-
Common Name: Calina Papaya / California Papaya Indonesia / Sweet Dwarf Papaya
-
Plant Type: Fast-growing, herbaceous dwarf perennial tropical fruit tree
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Demands maximum, intense, direct sunlight daily—at least 6–8 hours—to fuel rapid vegetative growth, heavy flowering, and high sugar concentration in the fruit).
-
Soil / Medium: Requires deep, rich, organic, and exceptionally well-draining soils. Highly sensitive to waterlogged roots or standing water, which can cause root rot within days; a soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5 is ideal.
-
Watering: Requires regular, consistent watering to support its fast growth and large, heavy fruits, keeping the soil evenly moist. However, always ensure excellent drainage so the roots never sit in soggy soil. Reduce watering slightly during cooler seasons.
-
Growth Habit: A sturdy, single-trunk dwarf tree that grows quickly, featuring large, tropical deeply-lobed leaves. It sets fruit exceptionally low on the trunk (often starting just 30–50 cm from the ground), making harvest incredibly accessible.
-
Temperature: Thrives continuously in warm, humid, tropical and subtropical climates (75°F to 95°F / 24°C to 35°C). Growth slows down dramatically below 60°F (15°C), and the plant cannot tolerate any frost or freezing conditions.
💡 Pro Growing Tip
Papaya seeds sprout beautifully when given constant warmth and humidity. To break dormancy and speed up the process, soak your Calina Papaya seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep directly into small starter pots filled with a loose, sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix (papayas dislike transplant shock, so biodegradable pots are excellent). Place the pots in a warm, sunny location or on a germination heat mat maintained at 75°F–85°F (24°C–29°C), keeping the soil lightly damp. Your vigorous green shoots will push through the soil confidently in just 10 to 14 days!
