Bradford Pear, also known as Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana), is a fast-growing ornamental deciduous tree prized for its dramatic spring flowering and vibrant fall color. Native to China and Taiwan, this adaptable landscape tree typically grows 30–50 feet tall. It begins with a pyramidal to columnar shape in youth and gradually develops into a broader oval canopy as it matures.

In early spring, before or as leaves emerge, the tree is covered in dense clusters of brilliant white flowers, often making the entire canopy appear snow-covered for about a week. During summer, glossy medium to dark green leaves create a dense, attractive canopy and often remain well into late fall. Autumn foliage turns brilliant shades of reddish-purple, orange, yellow, and red.

Cold hardy and tolerant of moderate drought and urban pollution, Bradford Pear is widely planted as a street tree, shade tree, and ornamental specimen. It is also suitable for bonsai cultivation.

🌱 Seed Preparation & Germination

For best results, follow these steps in order:

  1. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.

  2. Cold stratify for 90 days at 40°F in a moist medium (not wet).

  3. Sow 1/4 inch deep and keep evenly moist (not soggy).

Growing Tip: Plant in full sun for the best flowering and fall color display. Early structural pruning helps improve branch strength and long-term tree structure. Protect young trees from strong winds.
