Bradford Pear, also known as Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana), is a fast-growing ornamental deciduous tree admired for its dramatic spring blossoms and vibrant fall foliage. Native to China and Taiwan, this adaptable landscape tree typically grows 30–50 feet tall with a pyramidal to columnar form when young, gradually maturing into a broader oval canopy with age.

In early spring, before or as the leaves emerge, the tree becomes covered in dense clusters of brilliant white flowers, often making the entire canopy appear snow-covered for about a week. Glossy, medium to dark green leaves provide a lush summer display and often persist late into fall, turning striking shades of reddish-purple, orange, yellow, or red.

Highly tolerant of cold, moderate drought, and urban pollution, Bradford Pear is widely used as a street tree, shade tree, and ornamental specimen. It is also suitable for bonsai cultivation.

🌱 Seed Preparation & Germination

For best results, follow these steps in order:

  1. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.

  2. Cold stratify for 90 days at 40°F in a moist medium (not wet).

  3. Sow 1/4 inch deep and keep evenly moist (not soggy).

Growing Tip: Plant in full sun for the best flowering and fall color. Early structural pruning helps create stronger branch angles and a more durable tree form. Protect young trees from strong winds.
