🌿 Cultivation & Care Information

  • Botanical Name: Coffea arabica var. French Mission Bourbon

  • Common Name: French Mission Coffee / East African Bourbon Arabica / Heritage Coffee

  • Plant Type: Evergreen tropical shrub / Small tree

  • Sun Requirements: Bright, filtered sunlight or partial shade (Essential: Prefers morning sun or dappled light; avoid harsh, intense afternoon sun which can scorch the delicate foliage).

  • Soil / Medium: Requires rich, deeply organic, and well-draining acidic soil. A soil pH between 5.5 and 6.5 is ideal. For pots, use a premium mix rich in peat moss, compost, and perlite.

  • Watering: Requires regular, consistent watering to keep the soil evenly moist, mimicking a humid tropical cloud forest. Never allow the soil to dry out completely, but ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

  • Growth Habit: An elegant, medium-sized evergreen shrub with strong lateral branching habits and glossy leaves. Responds beautifully to structural pruning and thrives exceptionally well as a patio or greenhouse container plant.

  • Temperature: Thrives in mild, warm, and humid climates (60°F to 75°F / 15°C to 24°C). Highly sensitive to extreme frost and freezing temperatures; must be kept indoors or protected in cold regions.

💡 Pro Growing Tip

Coffee seeds retain their outer parchment shell, which protects the inner embryo but requires constant moisture to soften. To accelerate germination, soak the French Mission seeds in room-temperature water for 24 to 48 hours until the parchment softens. Sow the seeds flat-side down about 1/2 inch deep in a loose, damp sterile seed-starting mix or vermiculite. Maintain a consistently warm temperature (around 75°F / 24°C) and high humidity. Exercise patience—high-quality Arabica seeds sprout slowly and steadily, typically taking 4 to 8 weeks to push their iconic "soldier" hooks out of the soil!
