🌿 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Lagenaria siceraria
-
Common Name: Bottle Gourd / Calabash Gourd / Opo Squash / Long Melon
-
Plant Type: Annual warm-season climbing vining vegetable
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Demands at least 6–8 hours of direct, intense sunlight daily to promote strong vine growth and heavy fruit setting).
-
Soil / Medium: Thrives in rich, fertile, well-draining sandy loam or loamy soils packed with organic matter. A soil pH between 6.0 and 6.7 is ideal.
-
Watering: Requires consistent, deep watering at the base of the plant. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit development, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
-
Growth Habit: Extremely vigorous, aggressive trailing or climbing vine. While it can trail along the ground, it performs best and produces perfectly straight, clean gourds when trained vertically on a strong, heavy-duty trellis, arbor, or fence support.
-
Temperature: Warm-season crop. Sow seeds directly outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have reached at least 70°F (21°C).
💡 Pro Growing Tip
Bottle Gourd seeds have a thick, sturdy outer coat that can benefit from a little assistance to break dormancy. To accelerate and maximize germination success across your batch, gently clip or file the very outer edges of the seed coat (without damaging the internal embryo) and soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours prior to planting. Sow them 1 inch deep in a warm, sunny location. If your vine is growing aggressively but not setting fruit, gently pinch off the main growing tip when the vine reaches 6–8 feet; this encourages the growth of lateral branches, which produce a much higher concentration of female, fruit-bearing flowers!
