Blue Balsam Fir ‘Cooks Blue’ (Abies balsamea) is a beautiful blue-tinged selection of the classic balsam fir. Seed-grown trees may range in color from rich green to silvery-blue, with the blue tones often intensifying as the tree matures. This selection has also shown improved heat tolerance compared to the standard species.

Balsam Fir is a fragrant, narrow pyramidal evergreen conifer known for its dense, symmetrical shape and aromatic needles. Mature trees typically grow 50–70 feet tall with a spire-like crown. The flattened needles are glossy dark green above with distinctive white bands beneath, releasing a pleasant fragrance when crushed.

Upright purple cones form high in the crown and disintegrate at maturity—characteristic of true firs. The smooth gray bark features resin blisters containing sticky, aromatic sap.

Highly valued as a Christmas tree due to its fragrance and excellent needle retention, Blue Balsam Fir also makes a striking ornamental specimen and is suitable for bonsai in its early years.
