Blue Balsam Fir ‘Cooks Blue’ (Abies balsamea) is a beautiful blue-tinged selection of the classic balsam fir. Seed-grown trees may vary from deep green to silvery-blue, with blue coloration often intensifying as trees mature. This selection has also demonstrated improved heat tolerance compared to the straight species.

Balsam Fir is an aromatic, narrow pyramidal evergreen conifer with a graceful spire-like crown. Mature trees typically grow 50–70 feet tall and 15–25 feet wide. The flattened, glossy needles are dark green above with distinctive white bands beneath and release a fresh balsam fragrance when crushed — one reason this species is among the most popular Christmas trees.

Smooth gray bark features raised resin blisters containing aromatic sap. Upright purple cones form high in the crown and disintegrate at maturity, leaving the central spike — a defining trait of true firs.

Excellent for landscape specimens, windbreaks, reforestation projects, Christmas tree plantings, or bonsai in early stages. Ideal for colder climates.
