Blue Balsam Fir ‘Cooks Blue’ (Abies balsamea) is a stunning blue-tinged selection of the classic Balsam Fir. Seed-grown trees may range from deep green to silvery-blue, with many developing increasingly blue tones as they mature. This selection has also shown improved heat tolerance compared to the straight species.

Balsam Fir is an aromatic, narrow pyramidal evergreen conifer with a graceful, spire-like crown. Mature trees typically reach 50–70 feet tall and 15–25 feet wide. Branches are densely covered with flattened, glossy needles that are dark green above and distinctly white-banded beneath. When crushed, the needles release the fresh fragrance that makes balsam fir one of the most popular Christmas trees.

Smooth gray bark is dotted with resin blisters containing fragrant sap. Upright purple cones form high in the crown and disintegrate at maturity — a classic characteristic of true firs.

Ideal as a specimen landscape tree, windbreak, Christmas tree planting, or bonsai subject when young. Excellent for colder climates.
