Plant one of North America’s most valuable native hardwood trees with Black Cherry (Prunus serotina). This fast-growing, long-lived species is prized for its fragrant spring flowers, edible summer fruit, vibrant fall foliage, and high-quality timber.
Black Cherry typically grows 40–60 feet tall and may reach up to 100 feet under ideal conditions. It develops a straight trunk with an oval crown, making it an excellent shade and woodland tree. In early spring, abundant drooping clusters of small white fragrant flowers appear as the leaves unfold, attracting pollinators and beneficial insects.
By early summer, dark red to nearly black cherries ripen and are highly attractive to songbirds and wildlife. The fruit is edible for humans and commonly used in jelly, wine, and flavoring. In fall, glossy green leaves turn beautiful shades of yellow, orange, or red depending on growing conditions.
Black Cherry is:
• Cold hardy (Zones 4–9)
• Heat, drought, and salt tolerant
• Fast growing and long lived
• Excellent for wildlife habitat and shelter
• Highly valued for premium hardwood timber
Perfect for woodland plantings, homesteads, large properties, habitat restoration, and reforestation projects.
