Carya laciniosa, also known as shellbark hickory, is a slow-growing tree native to the eastern and midwestern United States. It prefers deep, rich soil and wet conditions, and its fruit is sweet and can be eaten raw or cooked. The wood of the shellbark hickory is hard and strong, making it suitable for tool handles, and it is also used for furniture, fuelwood, and drum sticks.


Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours, repeat process daily for 4 days


Stratification: cold stratify for 120 days


Germination: sow 1-2" deep, , mulch the seed bed, can be sown outdoors in the fall for spring germination, remove mulch upon germination
