🌿 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Manilkara zapota (Var. Big Jumbo)
-
Common Name: Big Jumbo Sapodilla / Vietnamese Chico / Giant Chikoo / Ciku Jumbo
-
Plant Type: Slow-growing evergreen tropical fruit tree
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct, intense sunlight daily to promote strong branch development and successfully support its heavy weight of jumbo fruits).
-
Soil / Medium: Exceptionally adaptable to a wide range of soils, including sandy loams, rocky soils, and even slightly alkaline mediums. However, it thrives best in deep, rich, organic, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
-
Watering: Requires regular, deep watering while the young tree is establishing its root network. Once fully mature, the tree develops remarkable drought tolerance, though consistent moisture yields the plumpest and juiciest fruits.
-
Growth Habit: A stately, slow-growing tree with a tough vertical trunk and a dense, attractive canopy. Naturally forms a beautiful ornamental shade tree or an eye-catching orchard focal point.
-
Temperature: Strictly a warm-climate plant that thrives in tropical and warm subtropical environments. Mature trees show good tolerance to brief, light frost, but young seedlings must be strictly protected from cold temperatures.
💡 Pro Growing Tip
Sapodilla seeds have a hard, glossy outer coat with a distinct sharp hook on one edge. To break dormancy and speed up the sprouting process, carefully use a piece of sandpaper or a small file to lightly scarify the flat side of the seed coat (taking care not to damage the soft inner white embryo). Soak the scarified seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting. Sow them 1/2 inch deep in a warm, loose, well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil warm and consistently moist—sprouts are sturdy and will emerge in about 2 to 4 weeks!
