Grow your own striking desert native with 120 Banana Yucca (Yucca baccata) seeds. This hardy evergreen shrub is prized for its dramatic sword-like foliage, tall flower spikes, and large edible fruits.
Native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, Banana Yucca is a slow-growing evergreen that typically matures to 4–6 feet tall. It begins as a dense clump of blue-green, sharply pointed leaves (12–40 inches long) with distinctive curling white fibers along the margins. As it matures, a short trunk develops, elevating the rosette for a bold, sculptural appearance.
In late spring to early summer, thick stalks rise above the foliage bearing clusters of creamy white, bell-shaped flowers often tinged with purple. These are followed by large, fleshy, banana-shaped fruits measuring 4–9 inches long. The fruits are edible when ripe and have been traditionally used for food.
Banana Yucca thrives in poor, sandy, rocky soils and is highly tolerant of drought, heat, cold, wind, and salt — making it perfect for xeriscaping and low-maintenance landscapes.
