🌿 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Manilkara zapota
-
Common Name: Bali Sapodilla / Bali Chikoo / Ciku / Chico Zapote
-
Plant Type: Slow-growing evergreen tropical fruit tree
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct, intense sunlight daily to promote strong branching and heavy fruit development).
-
Soil / Medium: Exceptionally adaptable to a wide range of soils, including sandy loams, rocky soils, and even slightly alkaline mediums. However, it thrives best in deep, rich, well-draining soil.
-
Watering: Requires regular, deep watering while the young tree is establishing its root system. Once mature, Sapodilla is highly resilient, exceptionally drought-tolerant, and easily handles periods of dry weather.
-
Growth Habit: A stately, slow-growing tree with a strong vertical trunk, tough bark, and a dense, attractive canopy. It functions beautifully as an ornamental shade tree or an orchard centerpiece.
-
Temperature: Strictly a warm-climate plant that thrives in tropical and warm subtropical environments. Mature trees show surprising tolerance to brief, light frost, but young seedlings must be strictly protected from cold temperatures.
💡 Pro Growing Tip
Sapodilla seeds have a hard, glossy outer coat with a distinct sharp hook on one edge. To break dormancy and speed up the sprouting process, carefully use a piece of sandpaper or a small file to lightly scarify the flat side of the seed coat (taking care not to damage the soft inner white embryo). Soak the scarified seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting. Sow them 1/2 inch deep in a warm, loose, well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil warm and consistently moist—sprouts are sturdy and will emerge in about 2 to 4 weeks!
