Arnot Bristly Locust (Robinia fertilis) is an extremely hardy, very fast-growing deciduous shrub ideal for erosion control, slope stabilization, reclamation projects, and large naturalized plantings. This vigorous shrub can reach 8–12 feet tall in just a few years and spreads readily by root suckers, forming dense thickets that provide rapid vegetative cover.
In late spring to early summer (May–June), fragrant sweet pea-like pink to pale purple flowers appear in showy racemes along the branches. The dark green compound leaves turn yellow in fall, and the stems are covered in distinctive bristly hairs that give the plant its common name.
Exceptionally adaptable, Arnot Bristly Locust tolerates cold, heat, wind, salt, drought, urban pollution, deer, and rabbits. It thrives in sandy or poor soils and improves soil fertility by fixing nitrogen—making it especially valuable for restoration and soil improvement projects.
⚠️ Due to its aggressive suckering habit, this shrub is best suited for slopes, erosion-prone areas, and large open landscapes rather than formal residential gardens.
