Arnot Bristly Locust (Robinia fertilis) is a rugged, extremely fast-growing deciduous shrub ideal for erosion control, land reclamation, and stabilizing difficult sites. Capable of reaching 8–12 feet tall within just a few years, this vigorous shrub spreads readily by root suckers, forming dense thickets that provide rapid vegetative cover.
In late spring to early summer (May–June), clusters of fragrant sweet pea-like pink to pale purple flowers bloom along the branches, creating a striking display. Branches are densely covered with bristly hairs, and foliage turns yellow in autumn.
This species tolerates cold, heat, wind, salt, urban pollution, drought, deer, and rabbits. It thrives even in sandy or poor soils and improves soil fertility by fixing nitrogen.
⚠️ Due to its aggressive suckering habit, this shrub is best suited for slopes, naturalized areas, erosion-prone sites, and large open landscapes rather than formal residential plantings.
