It is native to the Eastern and South Central United States and southern Canada and is popular for its shiny dark green leaves and ability to thrive in wet sites. The plant's nectar is used to create a pleasant honey, while Native Americans have brewed a black tea-like drink from dried and roasted inkberry leaves.


Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours


Stratification: warm stratify for 60 days, cold stratify for 60 days


Germination: sow seed 3/8" deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed.
