Grow a productive native shrub with this 600-seed pack of American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis). These seeds are from a Northern range collection, offering superior cold hardiness compared to southern sources—ideal for colder climates and northern gardens.
American Elderberry is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that typically reaches 5–12 feet tall with a similar spread. In early summer, it produces large, flat-topped clusters of fragrant white flowers up to 10 inches across. By late summer into fall, abundant clusters of glossy dark purple to black berries develop. The fruit is excellent for syrups, jams, jellies, pies, and elderberry wine. (Berries should be cooked before consumption.)
In autumn, the foliage turns attractive shades of yellow, orange, and red. Elderberry spreads by root suckers, making it perfect for hedges, privacy screens, wildlife gardens, erosion control, and naturalized plantings. Birds and pollinators are highly attracted to the flowers and fruit.
