American Elderberry is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that reaches 5–12 feet tall and wide. In early summer, it produces large, flat-topped clusters of fragrant white flowers up to 10 inches across. By late summer to fall, the plant is covered in glossy dark purple to black berries that are perfect for syrups, jellies, pies, and elderberry wine. (Berries should be cooked before eating.)

The foliage turns beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and red in fall. Elderberry spreads naturally by root suckers, making it excellent for hedges, privacy screens, naturalized plantings, and wildlife gardens. Birds and pollinators are especially attracted to the flowers and fruit.
