Celastrus scandens, also known as American Bittersweet, is a perennial vine that blooms in June and is commonly found in woodlands with well-drained soils. It has twining, woody stems that can grow up to 30 feet long and its orange fruits are poisonous to humans but loved by birds. Native Americans and pioneers used its roots for medicinal purposes, and it can grow in full sun and poor soil conditions.


Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours


Stratification: cold stratify for 90 days


Germination: sow seed 1/4" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
