Grow your own Adam’s Needle (Yucca filamentosa) — a bold, evergreen shrub prized for its dramatic sword-shaped foliage and towering creamy white flower spikes.
Native to sandy coastal regions and dry woodlands of the southern United States, this slow-growing, virtually stemless plant forms a dense basal rosette of rigid, spine-tipped green leaves up to 30 inches long. The distinctive curly white filaments along the leaf edges give this plant its unique ornamental character.
In late spring to early summer, mature plants send up striking flower stalks 5–8 feet tall (occasionally taller in warm climates), topped with nodding bell-shaped creamy white blooms. When flowering in groups, they resemble glowing white candles across the landscape — earning the nickname “Our Lord’s Candles.”
Extremely tough and adaptable, Adam’s Needle tolerates:
• Cold winters (Zone 5)
• Heat and extended drought
• Sandy and poor soils
• Salt spray and coastal exposure
• Wind and urban conditions
Ideal for xeriscaping, rock gardens, dry slopes, borders, foundations, and architectural accents. Butterflies are attracted to the blooms, and the plant provides habitat value for wildlife.
