Grow your own Adam’s Needle (Yucca filamentosa) — a hardy, evergreen shrub prized for its bold sword-shaped foliage and tall spikes of creamy white bell-shaped flowers.
Native to the southeastern United States, this slow-growing, virtually stemless broadleaf evergreen forms a dense basal rosette of rigid, spine-tipped green leaves up to 30 inches long. The leaf margins feature distinctive curly white filaments that peel away as the leaves mature, giving the plant its unique ornamental texture.
In late spring to early summer, dramatic flower stalks rise 5–8 feet tall (sometimes taller in warm climates), producing showy panicles of nodding creamy white flowers. When in bloom, yuccas resemble tall snowy-white candles in the landscape — often called “Our Lord’s Candles.”
Extremely tough and adaptable, Adam’s Needle tolerates:
• Cold (Zone 5)
• Heat and drought
• Poor sandy soils
• Salt and coastal conditions
• Wind exposure
It is ideal for xeriscaping, rock gardens, dry slopes, foundation plantings, borders, and coastal landscapes. Butterflies are attracted to the blooms, and the plant provides wildlife value.
