Hibiscus moscheutos Luna Red is a perennial shrub in the Malvaceae family. This is a compact bush growing 3-4' tall and wide with several branches that produce plenty of blooms. It can be put into a container for a patio plant but must get plenty of sun. The flowers are a dark Burgandy and 8" wide, hence the dinner plate. This Luna red is deer resistant as well. It grows best if fertilized once a month and likes well-drained soils. It dies in the winter and will not require water at this time unless it seems to dry up. Zones 5-8
Germination
Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for ten days. Soak seeds for 12 hours. Sow seeds into a well-drained, sandy compost and cover seeds to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist. Seeds may germinate slowly.
