Hibiscus acetosella, also known as Red Leaf Hibiscus is not the typical flowering hibiscus found in many tropical climates.
It has delicious edible leaves and flowers. This perennial plant grows in an upright, leggy manner up to 6 feet tall, but looks best pruned back to maintain a small bushy shape. The plant tolerates some shade, is highly resistant to root-knot nematodes, is not affected by pests or diseases, tolerates drought conditions, easy to start from seed and is a great container plant.
The burgundy leaf color is similar in appearance to Japanese Maple leaves. For best leaf color, place this shrub in a sunny spot. Without full sun, the leaves do not attain their best color. They also produce a beautiful pink & red, edible flower. Harsh frosts can kill the plant.
